Golden Temple Near Vellore

One of the biggest Hindu shrines in southern India, the Sri Puram Golden Temple a grand golden temple built by a spiritual organization in Tamil Nadu at an approximate cost of Rs 600 crore, the consecration (kumbhabhishekam) was performed on August 24, 2007, presence of over 30,000 devotees.

The Mahalakshmi temple, located on a sprawling 100 acres of land at Sripuram, near Vellore, about 125 km from Chennai, has been constructed by Vellore-based Sri Narayani Peetam, headed by spiritual leader Sri Sakthi Amma.

"The Taj Mahal was built as an expression of love for a single person but the Sri Puram Golden Temple stands for unconditional love for the entire humanity," says Amma, 31, who also goes by the name of Shakti Siddha.

"We know it is also the sign of the universal goddess - Lakshmi," says William, who gives only one name and says he is of Canadian origin.

The steps that lead to the innermost section are laid with polished black and grey granite from the neighbouring South Arcot and Dharmapuri districts. A cubic metre of black granite is priced at 0. So is the grey stone called "Paradiso" because of its wavy patterns of violet with the colour of iron. And this too has been used in large quantities.

"If we had built a hospital, factory, educational institution or a business, it would have ended up serving a small community. But now, Amma's temple will sow the seeds of goodness in the hearts of everyone who visits here," Amma, clad in ochre robes, says in Tamil.

The temple, covering 55,000 sq ft area, has intricate carvings and sculptures in gold. Except the walking path, the entire structure has been made of gold and copper. This would be more grandeur than the Golden Temple in Amritsar , mutt sources said.

About 400 goldsmiths and coppersmiths, including craftsmen from Tirumala-Tirupati Devasthanams, have completed the architectural marvel in gold in six years..

More than one and half tone of pure gold was glitter and gleam under the sun, Devotees hail the temple as 'one of the wonders of the world' and say that it is the only temple covered fully with gold.

According to official sources, the gold bars were purchased through RBI in "a transparent manner." First the coppersmiths set to work creating a copper base on the temple structure with engravings and etchings before the gold, beaten into nine layers of foils, was draped around it.

The sanctum sanctorum will hold the deity of Mahalakshmi made of stone granite, but covered with gold kavacham (adornments).

"The Sripuram or Spiritual Park is Amma's dedication to the world and mankind," said P Murali, a trustee of the Peetam.

The temple has been designed in such a way that visitors can reach the golden temple only after going through a star-shaped pathway, which has the quotes from Gita, Bible and Quran displayed on either side.

Surrounded by mountains and lush and scenic beauty, the temple, entirely conceived and designed by 'Amma', would be open to people of all religions. "The temple is Amma's gift to mankind," the sources said.

"When one enters the Sripuram, their focus is just on the magnificent temple. But when they leave, they cannot do so without taking some messages and gaining some wisdom," according to a booklet detailing the 'services' rendered by the Peetam. "In this quagmire of materialism, Sripuram rises as an inspiration to man to find the divinity within him," adds a brochure

Murali said arrangements were being made to hire personnel to throw a security cover around the temple. "But the gold sheets have been laid out in such a manner that it would cost more to rip it off than purchase the gold," said a top Vellore district official.

I wonder how many thousands of Indians living in poverty would have been benefitted if those 600 crores were spent on uplifting them. gods do not demand us to decorate the temples with gold. gods would have been much more happier if all those donated money was spent on alleviating suffering of atleast some people.

Anonymous said...

True, the Gods do not demand that we do such things. However, temples provide a constant source of activity that uplifts the community surrounding it for a period that goes on longer than if money alone was distributed. It provides work, business opportunity, tremondous amounts of food distribution, and more often than not, free medical care. There are many ways of alleviating suffering.

I love the divine mother Lakshmi, but I am concerned the environmental issues of gold reflecting, expanding and adding to heat in the environment and causing allergies of different kinds. Moreover all monumental efforts in India are aimed to remain for a long span of time, who will maintain these structures> soon they fall in need of repairs and restoration - in these times where every Indian is the king of India (republic India) are there people who will maintain such beautiful places?

Also what sort of worship methods are used, Vaishnava or Shakta?

In this day when men lust for their children and hunger after wealth and riches, what forsight Sri Amma has. Only one who lives in Devi Ma's arms could have such vision. Gold is nothing more than AmbikaMa showing the world her radient glory. Just as MaKali has shown us the beauty of absolute liquid midnight black. All the gold, all the silver, all the platinum are already Mataji's. They are her, hers, and from her. So why can we not celebrate this great show of HER WEALTH !

Absolute stupidity...Nothing else

Anonymous said...

These stupid things can happen only in india where millions of people starve without food and these people are creating a temple with 600 crore. Only The Lakshmi knows where the money came from. And if you say that it is all from donations from disciples why didn't Amma say "we can see god through serving the mankind", as said by many spiritual leaders of the past. When a man is starving he cares only about the food not the god. Why don't Amma feed those people by spending one crore before showing them her 600 crore Glittering golden temple. It is nothing but an exhibit of wealth and advertisement for Amma.

Anonymous said...

It is for those who think this is stupidity. I wonder how much these people who have commented are spending to the poor who are below poverty every month they earn. The industrialists from India are emerging as the world's richest and how many charitalbe institutions they have, etc..., they might be employing in thousands, but that too for educated and not uneducated. Gods might not demand to do such things, ya that is true. Question those people who have constructed Temples for Actresss first.

This is more than a temple, it is a symbol for those who want to improve life. you can crib about all the poor people you want, But the poor are themselves responsible for their state. with the govt. building schools and feeding the children. i dont think they would stay poor for long. they need to understand that they need education to come up in life. they choose the short term easy way out, they beg and stay in filth. they have no will to improove their own situation. 600 crores is not a large sum any more in this country. at the end of the day, if you are not better off than what u were in the morning, it is ur fault.

Building in Gold or any other precious metals is not important.Bakthi is important. There was more Gold to the kings than today. But did they build any?

This temple may be a show piece but doesn't really turn people towards bakthi.

They built jus to get fame than bakthi.Only God Knows

In the Srimad Bagavatam Lord Krsna says “Humility, Pridelessness, Nonviolence, Tolerance simplicity, steadiness and self-control; renunciation, absence of false ego, the perception of the evil of birth, death, old age and disease and even-mindedness amid pleasant and unpleasant events; resorting to solitary places, detachment from the general mass of people; accepting the importance of self-realization, and philosophical search for the Absolute Truth--all these I thus declare to be knowledge, and what is contrary to these is ignorance.” Also he says that one should study all religious scriptures. Why? Because he is the only true friend of the Universe and it is his desire to have everybody stop suffering needlessly in this material world. So this is the real reason why we should all go to the temple. Just to become more intelligent and to give up this bodily concept of life of which all fools identify with.

There is an entry fee of Rs 1500/-. Is this true? So a temple for only the rich?

Anonymous said...

I would say it's an utter waste to construct such kind of temle, when there are so many people living in poverty with no food and money to pay their academic fees, govt. could have done so many good things for the poor and the needy.
I would definitely say that the temple built is for name and fame. It's not a place for worship , for people coming will only look at the temple with AWE...

@swarnashifa(blah-blah-blah) and all the other dorks who've posted here

Really amazing how thick-headed you all are! I'm openly challenging all of you to tell whoever's building that "so-called-temple" in UP, that what they're doing is a waste of money! And that project is supposed to be funded by the state government too! Rs.800,000 crore (read as: Eight Hundred Thousand Crore - and 'yes', thats a L-O-T of money) if the news channels got it right...

Hope thats knocked a bit of sense into your little heads... All the news channels like NDTV, Headlines Today, Times Now, Star etc. have criticised that move (saying its only politically motivated and a waste of money etc) and I believe even BBC made a small mention of it saying what a waste of money that was in a "developing" economy like ours...

And you're all saying the few paltry crores spent here is a waste of money... Seriously, I think you ought to see a doc...

== For the record ==
I'm not a seriously mad orthodox guy nor am I a fanatic... I'm just a guy who likes to talk sense... unlike certain others...

.........and so many other poor people will live inpoverty, due to a lack of understanding the greatness of God. People breed more than rats and pass urine in stool in the streets like cats and dogs. The stench is horrible with open sewers and filth every where, but in tyhe temple devotees learn cleanliness is next to Godliness and all good such qualities are taught at a proper church, temple or wherever God is whorshiped, but people who read the news papers see only the bad because it makes for sensational news.

One thousand years ago there were 10,000 Buddhist temple in China, both men and women who lived in the temple were celebate an had no children. There was not an over poulation problem, but the war lords did not like the idea becaue they had no soliders for thier defense. So they destroyed all the temples and forced man and womon to life together in order to produce many, many children as now there is such an over population problem due to a lack of God, who so desires his childen to come to him, rather than waste so much time living a degrated human life and acting like cats and dogs without responciblities.

So if you ever go to India and see just how human beings pass there stools right in front of you, without even thinking twice, because that is how it is with a half a million people coming into Delhi each year looking for food and shelter of which there isn't. These Indians need to learn thier own true culture of cleanliness and being more close to God and his eternal nature, which is alwaye brillant, pure and wholesome and good for every living being and not just for the rich...................

All can be said that money can be spend on poor etc..Temple lives forever till the end that makes direct & in-direct influence on man kind progress & development etc.We are seeing in modern days..temples being destroyed, people being marginalised..at least this man does spend on something usefull for hindu religion...is it wrong? why so much fuss..be proud rather than keep on complaining...try to provide some constructive comment on moving forward ..ask/compare what we have done..temple will always be a temple small or big..size does not count or matter...blessing will always be there..No need to start chain of email on this comment..move on to another issue which needs urgent attention..

You all talking about 600 Crores money wasted in constructing a temple. But as you all could see in the historical times our Kings spent whole lot of money and manpower in constructing huge temples and now we are treating those temples as historical marvelous and its been appreciated by many archeologists thoughout the world as wonders. But in the recent days these kind of temple construction never happens at this magnitude. I am seeing this would be a great inititative for our childrens to talk about how we are discussing about the present historical temples.

Its just my loud thinking that the money is not wasted here its been rotated for helping poor by way of direct and indirect employment and self employment. If he is constructing a college or hospital how long he can give free education and free treatment without any inflow of money.

More over if nobody makes initiatives like this then who will do it and how we can enjoy those beautiful temple, excellent ambience and marvelous landscapes.

Poverty is there everywhere do you think you can find a Country / Place where there is no poverty. So it doesnot mean that after reaching 'Zero' Poverty only we can think about all this temple building exercise then it will never happen. Its a way of uniting people and civilizing the people. Our country is grown guys, so Think Big and Dream Big as our President Said.

I am a resident of Vellore, the home to Sripuram. Just a few clarifications. There is no entry fee to the temple. I guess even great temples like Tirupathi charge an entry fee. Not a single rupee goes out of the devotee's pocket towards entrance in Sripuram. The world has become so materalistic, that we need to serve everything on a golden platter to the public. Hinduism is diminishing day by day due to conversion and other unorthodox practises by other religions. i feel treating devotees with a golden temple and the beauty of words from the vedas is required.

Krishvanth said...

The temple has been constructed by a Vellore based mutt, Sri Narayani Temple. People may think as to why such huge sums of money has gone into construction of a Golden temple when starvation deaths and famine still rocks rural pockets of India. For the kind information of all bloggers, the mutt runs a school. It also runs a Hospital and research centre which provides quality treatment at a nominal cost. Thus there by generating jobs for young people like us in the surrounding areas. By construction of this temple. The usual sleepy town of Vellore, known for VIT and CMC hospital is now bustling with activity. Hotels and Lodges have reported high profits and Transportation of all forms, buses, autos and taxis, have registered a major jump in income and profits. This has forced the government to bring in proposals to improve road conditions and has even triggered a proposal to develop the idle airport at Vellore by 2009. Construction of a Golden temple considered a "waste" by many of the bloggers here, need to think of local facts, analyse them and then comment on the same. This has indeed highlighted the supremacy of the vedas and not only hinduism but all religions (do visit the temple, it has incriptions of vedas and sayings from all religions with explanations) and also uplifted the life of local people residing of the once sleepy town of Vellore now an active city bustling with activity.

Being a true hindu I definitely vouch for a place of worship but this is beyond excess. Imagine the help/support this 600 crore rupees would have done for the poor of India.

temple is an edifice to the deity. How many of us go to the deity placed under the tree, except a namaskar. We still go to tirupati, rameshwaram and kashi. Why not get satisfied with just the god under a tree or your street corner. Likewise this huge temple may get huge attendees in return, any fund by them would be helpful for the huge society, be optimistic. How many of you skip your third meal for the sake of the beggar in front of your doors? be practical.

Praveena.. Excellent.. It is true that everything needs to be served in a special manner today. Even though crores of rupees went into the construction, I strongly beleive that it will provide service to the society which is much more worth.. culture is something which cannot be created in a day or two.. and i beleive that monuments like temples and other historic places plays vital role in teaching our new generation about the forgotten culture..

and for the people who wonder / concerned by the number of people below poverty line, i suggest / request them to donate one meal per week towards the poor who are suffering with hunger.

INSTEAD OF THIS PLEASE CONSTRUCT 6000 HOUSES FOR PEOPLE DONT HAVE SHELTERS AND I THINK GOD LIKE THAT MORE THAN THIS

Voice of India said...

I happened to visit this amazing place yesterday. Its an achievement of it own. In terms of construction as well as maintaining this shrine. People surely think that, god never asked for golden temple and there is no need to spend enormous money in doing so.

Government has not built this place. This temple has built by donations from the people across the globe. To build this place, at least few thousand people would have worked for few months. Now around 400 - 500 people are working on this premises for maintaining this temple. It has also created job for another thousands of people in travel & tourism. Temple trust is also running Hospital and created many business opportunities around the place.

Whatever the money is spend is the money which was in rich people account is getting distributed to needy ones through some social cause.

I do not think the Tirupathi devasthanam does enough for public. Any other religious place with this contribution would have made much superior arrangements & planned helping the needy in constructive ways in transparent manner. Since contributions are from public they have moral responsibility to let us know how the contributions are utilised.
My opinion on Vellore temple is that today maintainig existing temple itself is mammoth task. We should plan temples at a particular place in each city for people to visit at their convenience and more than show other human factors should be given priority.

It is not about the gold. It is about the idea behind. The gold attracts people from outside to go there and to donate. This money goes into the social program, founded by Sri Sakthi Amma (free surgery for the needy, free marriages for the poor (Kalyani), free food on weekends for the people....and so on).

This is great and I am glad, to have met him in person few and having been able to talk to him, days ago. He is a very inspiring person and I wish him all the best for the future.

To have given the money to the poor would not have had such a huge impact on the life of the needy people there. A constant flow of money ensures more output for the poor at the end.

Anonymous said...

This message/information to those who claimed this as a stupidity. Actually, these are stupid people. Remember that all those money is not owned by 'Amma', ofcourse, she contributed some and many others contributed. Other wise those money left with them only. With this project, there are lots of opportunities and employments, free medicare, free foods what not. This is a direct question to those stupid peopl since they always tell this much big money would have been distributed to poor. Did these stupids ever gave a single rupee to poor?' No, not at all. They are good only on papers.

Anonymous said...

There is a saying...

"Give a man something to eat and he will be satisfied for the day. Teach him how to catch a fish, and he will never go hungry again"

It is not about the gold on the temple, it is about the idea behind and all the beautiful social projects the Amma created. The gold is only to attract attention, to bring in people who are willing to donate. This money is the key for projects like free surgery for the poor or free mariages, called Kalyani and so on...

He is a wonderful spiritual person and I feel very grateful to have been blessed by him just a few days ago. Will definitly go there again, if I have the opportunity.

There are thousands of people living in poverty in other countries besides India but though, Christianity is powerful and rich. They don't go building hospitals, schools for the poor. They still build churches and try to preach the good of their religion. This temple was built for the greater good to bring ignorant people of India and teach them knowledge and truth of self realization.

Whatever said good or bad about the Vellore Porkoil, there is one big benifit. Vellore will now be big on the tourism map. A sleepy town even 10 years back, it is suddenly buzzling with activity.

One would recall Sriperumbudur was a sleepy town 10 years back and Rajeev Gandhi Ninaivagam suddenly brought life into it.

Whatever said, it is a good thing for the town. Till now Vellore had only CMC and the jail. The temple is suddenly bringing in a new economy.

Once the Abdullapuram airport is developed, Vellore will grow into an important center of the South.

Luckily I went to the temple last week.Excellent work, just marvellous. Its not in the hands of a human to do such a task.Only enlighten people gifted by God can be a part of such activities.
The person is not a lady but a man, named Sakhti Amma.
We happened to meet(darshan) the person also.No wrds to describe him.Very down to Earth.A smiling face.
He already got so much, why will he do all this for fame or money.
Most of the time he is in meditation.
You will really feel the peace and a kind of satisfaction visiting there. The location, maintainance and scenery wht to say.
Stop complaining and try to admire the beautiful work of God.

Well,

think about the economic growth thats happening around Vellore since building this temple. Even government spends millions on certain development. This is spiritual development which creates good economic growth as a by-product. Those of you who comment that this is stupid or only in India this happen, YES it happens only in India. NOT because of stupidity but to preserve the spiritual nerve which is vital for future generation as well as ours. Since the temple was built, Business growth has been amazing, land value have grown many folds...and ofcourse spritual growth. Stop complaining friends.. Look at the bigger picture..
In US, more then half of the population are into some sort of anti depression.. rich country???
This is same for all western countries...For all Indians, be like chinese, be proud of our own culture, language and heritage.

People criticizing this temple miss the most important point. People who donated money had Faith. Faith that this would accrue them merit for this life and the next ones. Of course building schools and hospitals are also good. But Giving to those, Worthy of receiving gifts ensures highest merit.

Still its not as good as the Golden Temple, in the eyes of people theres only one Golden Temple in India and thats in Amritsar and is visited by more people than the Taj Mahal it will be the number one most visited place in india soon.

I'm indeed surprised to see criticisms about temple building. I hope people realise that temples have given way for many cities and towns to develop in India. Madurai, Tirupati, Tanjure, and many others in South India have all flourished because of temples. Cultural and Tourism activities giving enormous income comes from Temples. Tourism, because of temples, give scope for both directly and indirect employment. Many places in India are thrieving because of pilgrimage tourism. From big hotels to rickshaw pullers, pilgrimage tourism creates employment galore. The so called poor people some anonymous writers talk about should understand that temples have given scope for them to lead better life if they want to.

Anonymous said...

I am writing this to all those anonymous writers who call temple building a stupidity. Tourism develops in and around a temple giving way for many activities such as hotels, tour operators, taxis, autos, rickshaws, eateries, shops and in the process give direct and indirect employement to many. I can tell these anonymous writers that pilgrimage tourism has given more employment than any other industry in India. If you take Tirupati in South India, for example, the entire city thrieves on the existance of the temple. This itself breaks the record of Indian Railways being the largest employer in the world. There are many such places in India which thrieve on temples.

They are mostly using it for their own families upliftment OR to provide subsidies for Haj Pilgrims and to Plant more and more churches in every village and hamlet of Andhra.

All religions express thier love for the almighty in ways that might shock leftists, secularists and liberals but this is nothing compared to the 2600 crore memorial in UP for the likes of Kansi Ram et. all and the many mindless politically and organized religion motivated expenditures! I visited this temple last week. I also was skeptic whether such huge waste of money to show pomp and wealth is justifiable. But I noticed a small note in the temple premises among many other quotes from Vedas and psalms which was an eye-opener. It said the expense could have used to build schools or colleges or to feed lack of people for "one time". But this investment will generate money for generations to come and can be used to build many schools, colleges and hospitals and to feed millions directly or indirectly. I felt that the peace one devotee gets and the slightest transformation he experiences towards his attitude towards poor, the slight moral inspiration he gets will change his outlook to life and might prompt him to help others.
This is a one time investment and look at the the number of families benefited directly and indirectly for generations. This is the same idea behind the construction of all temples, churches and mosques.

You can visit the deity here without spending a single paisa as well as the rich can buy special tickets and pay for expensive offerings and poojas. The result is the same. This system is universal. Haj, with due respect to Islam is possible for rich who can afford, so as visiting the Holy land and Vatican by the Christian fraternity. The profit generated by all religious institutions are utilized for philanthropy and charity. Of course, bad elements are every where. Check on this.

Nice post on temple. The delicate art work in the temple owes it's beauty to manual labour which also involved converting gold chunks into gold foils and mounting the foils on copper. It is believed everything in the temple has vedic significance including the star shaped path known as Sri Chakra. The temple is certainly a must visit for its stunning beauty and grandeur.
